Oakland is my home town! I watched in horror when a car fell off the edge of the broken pavement of the old bridge after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 and was intrigued when I heard about the construction of a new "Oakland Side" of the Bay Bridge in 2002. When the new span finally opened on September 2, 2013, I knew I had to photograph it! I felt like "we" (Oakland) finally had a bridge that was as beautiful as the San Francisco side! It took a little while before I was able to make my way "home" to take the photograph I wanted to, but I was blessed with a beautiful evening once I did.
Just the November before I captured this image, a high school friend of mine was elected as Mayor of Oakland. I gave her a specially cropped version of this image as a sort of "congratulations on being elected Mayor" gift.
It truly is a beautiful bridge for a beautiful city!
